Rehearsals

Charts, Ears, and What to Prep Before Rehearsal

What players should arrive *already* knowing — and what the rehearsal itself is for.

Duration · 12:45 Published · March 8, 2026

Arrive knowing

  • The key, tempo, and arrangement map.
  • The melody — sung, not hummed.
  • Their own part cold, without the recording.

Use rehearsal for

  • Feel, dynamics, and transitions.
  • Hand-offs and cues.
  • The two or three moments on each song that only become clear when the room is playing together.

The habit that changes everything

Send charts early and set a tempo-practice expectation. Rehearsals stop being note-learning sessions and start being ensemble sessions. That’s the entire goal.
