Music Director Live Example

Watch a music director actually run a band live — counting in, cueing sections, calling drum drops and dynamic builds in real time.

Duration · 14:50

This is a live demonstration of everything the previous lesson described — a music director in action, leading a real band through a worship set. Rather than a lecture, this is your chance to watch the role play out in real time.

What to watch for

As the band plays through songs like Happy Day and Battle Belongs, listen for the short, well-timed calls layered over the music:

  • Setting up before the count-in — “we’re starting at zero, just kick, drum, and guitar… start the click at one second.”
  • Cueing what’s coming next so no one is guessing — section numbers, “just drums,” “bring it in,” “here we go, the beat.”
  • Calling dynamics in real time — building the band up, then “break… little drop” to pull it back down for an intimate moment.
  • Staying one step ahead — every cue lands before the change, not on top of it, so the band moves together as one.

Notice how little the MD has to say, and how much it accomplishes. The goal isn’t constant chatter — it’s the right word at the right moment so the band stays tight, transitions stay smooth, and the congregation never sees the seams.

Application

  • As you watch, note every cue the MD gives. Which of those moments would your band currently miss without that voice in their ears?
  • Notice the timing of the cues — always a beat or two ahead of the change. How could you coach your MD (or yourself) to anticipate rather than react?
  • Pick one song in your next set and write out the cues a music director would give. Could you hand that sheet to someone and have them run it?
