Gain Staging from the Stage Up
Set the board up right at the source and everything downstream becomes easier.

The principle
Every stage of the signal chain has a sweet spot. Hit it early and the whole mix falls into place. Miss it at the preamp and no amount of downstream EQ can fix it.
The walkthrough
- Start with all fader trims at unity.
- Sing or play the loudest passage you’ll actually perform, not a polite test.
- Ride the gain so the preamp meter hits the upper third of green, never the red.
- Only then touch EQ and compression.
Common mistake
Gain-staging for a soundcheck run-through, not for the peak of the second chorus when the room is full.
